Artist Statement

This work represents the parallel worlds of reality and the subconsciousness. Anything can happen in the subconscious, and my artwork expresses a state of weightlessness and space as microcosms of an inner world. It captures a sense of alienation and loneliness that is human nature.

In characterizing inner descriptions, these works can be placed on the vague border between two worlds, which coexist in the same space. It expresses reality and illusion, and dual images in reality and unreality. Our daily life is one of a humdrum existence, especially for urban people, and these pieces express how the human mind wants to escape into a dream world. In my work, I combine the observed reality of a group of objects such as chairs, boxes, ropes and dolls with imaginary space that, for me, express the complicated yet delicate lives of humans.

The objects I choose represent specific ideas. The little woodman symbolizes an isolated human being: everyone has problems, but they must solve them themselves. The box represents formulas and stereotypes, while the open box exemplifies freedom, and cityscapes and seascapes are the unpredictable world. The combination of realistic objects with unreal situations dramatizes the strange world of human thoughts and emotions.

I use a glazing technique used by many artists in the Renaissance. I love this technique because when I paint with transparent colors on my canvas repeatedly, the base colors change, producing rich color tones.
